Polar Vortex 2019!
Polar Vortex 2019!
The end of January 2019 has sure been a cold one. But why has it been so cold across the US? There is this thing coming through called a polar vortex. But what exactly is a polar vortex? According to the national weather service, “The polar vortex is a large area of low pressure and cold air surrounding both of the Earth’s poles. It ALWAYS exists near the poles, but weakens in summer and strengthens in winter. The term “vortex” refers to the counter-clockwise flow of air that helps keep the colder air near the Poles. Many times during winter in the northern hemisphere, the polar vortex will expand, sending cold air southward with the jet stream.” Here is Johnson City we have been having temperatures that have been in the teens before wind chill. However, there are some places in the country that have been in the negatives consistently. The temperatures have been the coldest in this region for the first time in a long time. Most places everything is shutting down because of the fact that if you stay outside for longer than 5-10 minutes, you can get frostbite.
So, with it being so cold outside, don’t forget to take care of yourself, but also your animals and people who might not have adequate shelter during this cold season. If you see pets outside and you think the owners are neglecting them, call the police and let them know! If you see someone who might be homeless or who needs some extra help during this time, take some supplies to them and try to find them some shelter. This cold is something fierce and not everyone has the opportunities to stay warm!
Also, prep your house for the cold! Keep some ice around and throw it out on your steps and driveway to help keep the ice from forming. Keep the water in your faucets dripping to help prevent your pipes from bursting. Get your HVAC serviced. Keep extra heaters in your home in case something happens to your heat pump. Try to put towels or door stoppers on your door to help keep the cold out and the warm in.
This cold is only temporary but some of the damage from it can be expensive! Make sure you and your family, and the house you live in are all prepped for the cold and then just hunker down, get some good movies or books, have your coffee at the house, and stay as cozy as possible! Enjoy the time to slow down and spend time with the people you love!
